Standing for Israel Before It Is Too Late

Forty-five years ago today, on April 1, 1979, Iran officially became the Islamic Republic of Iran. It was one of the darkest days in modern history…for America…for Israel…and the entire world. In Iran, they called it the first day of the “government of God.”

It happened because a weak liberal in the White House, Jimmy Carter, foolishly betrayed our ally the Shah of Iran and helped force him out of the country. I personally interviewed the shah’s wife, and she told me the whole sordid story. Iran is the threat it is today because of American folly.

And so for the past 45 years Iran, has been ruled by demonic radical Islamists who believe that Israel should be wiped from the map. It is an article of faith in their theology that a bloody war is necessary before the “mahdi” returns — the twelfth descendant of Mohamed — and places the entire world under submission to Islam.

 Before the revolution, Iran was one of Israel’s strongest friends. Now the Jewish people have no more bitter enemy. They are pursuing their nuclear weapons program because they mean it when they say they want to wipe Israel off the map. They call Israel a cancer that needs to be removed.

The war for survival that Israel has been fighting since the demonic deadly Hamas terrorist attack on October 7 has Iran’s fingerprints all over it. Hamas receives the majority of its funding from Iran. 

Iran smuggles in weapons — missiles, rockets, guns, and explosives — and trains Hamas fighters. They provided funding for the $10,000 promised to each soldier who killed a Jew…and for the new houses promised to those who brought back hostages.

Iran ordered this attack on Israel to protect its nuclear weapons program. Despite all the treaties they have signed and broken (and remember that Islam regards it as perfectly legitimate and even praiseworthy to lie to infidels), despite all the sanctions, and despite everything that has been done to stop them, Iran has never ceased work on its nuclear weapons program. 

This attack was a warning of what Israel can expect if they attack Iran. Iran was frighteningly close to having atomic weapons when President Trump left office, and they are even closer now. They know that Israel regards a nuclear Iran as a deadly and unacceptable threat. And they unleashed Hamas in an attempt to distract Israel and keep them from attacking their nuclear weapons program.

The briefings and updates I am receiving from top government officials in Israel are terrifying. Iran has a much larger terror army ready to attack at any moment, Hezbollah in Lebanon.

I was in Lebanon in 1983 at a time when very few people in the Western world were even aware that Hezbollah even existed. Iran created and armed Hezbollah to let them launch deniable attacks on America and Israel. I was in Beirut on October 23rd when a Hezbollah terrorist drove a truck bomb onto the airport where the U.S. marines were stationed. I had preached to them the day before and spent the night sleeping on the beach. I was awakened by a massive blast. The explosion killed more than 240 American servicemen. Iran was responsible.

Hezbollah in Lebanon is a deadly threat. They have ten times as many terrorist fighters as Hamas — at least 100,000. They have at least 150,000 missiles hidden under homes, schools, hospitals, and mosques ready to fire when Iran gives the word.

They have been launching probing rocket attacks across the border for weeks — more than 1,000 since October 7. Dozens of Israeli towns and kibbutzim have been evacuated. 

I met with and prayed with and wept with some of these people who have been made homeless because of these attacks. A widespread war would overwhelm Israel’s missile defenses.

That means that at least half the country would be forced into bomb shelters. Israeli military leaders told me they expect the power grid and utility services to be a major target.

Iran hopes to use Hezbollah to leave Israel in the dark…to force the people into bomb shelters where they will have nothing to eat or drink, and no way to get help.

It will be a humanitarian disaster like nothing the modern Jewish state has ever seen. And God is calling us to do something about it. 

When Hamas attacked, we responded as quickly as we could. We provided food and shelter and medicine and so much more. 

But the scale of the likely coming war will be so vast that we cannot wait until it happens to respond. We have to work right now to get ready. That’s why we launched Operation Esther. 

This outreach is continuing everything we are already doing — housing the homeless, taking food to poor Holocaust survivors unable or too afraid to leave their homes, blessing IDF soldiers who are putting their lives on the line — and at the same time, making preparations for the war to expand.

When Hezbollah fires its 150,000 missiles, Israel’s utility network will be shut down. The people who will be forced into bomb shelters will not have water or food or medical kits or a generator for electricity.

On my first trip to Israel more than 40 years ago, I met Dr. Reuben Hecht. As we talked, he told me to call him Reuben instead of Dr. Hecht. As I was leaving the meeting, I said, “It was great being with you today, Joseph.” He grabbed my hand and said, “I told you my name was Reuben.” I apologized and told him it was because of jet lag.

He said, “That was not jet lag. Sit back down. In 1943, my father was dying. He took me by the hand and said, ‘Joseph, the nation of Israel will be born, and you will feed it bread.’ After 1948, I sold our family’s shipping business and started food distribution in Israel. No one except my wife knows the story, but you called me ‘Joseph’ just like my father did.”

That conversation changed the world. Dr. Hecht became a mentor to me. He was senior adviser to Prime Minister Menachem Begin and opened so many doors for me. God called Reuben Hecht to feed the nation like Joseph, and today He is calling you and me to do the same.
