Hear the Call to Comfort God’s Chosen People

Dear Friend,

In just a few days the shofars will sound across Israel and in Jewish communities around the world heralding Rosh Hashanah, The Feast of Trumpets, and the start of the Jewish new year. 

It is a time of rejoicing and celebration.

And in those ten days, hundreds of poor Jewish people, including elderly Holocaust survivors, young Jewish orphans and those who lost everything they owned in the devastating Iranian missile attacks, will get sicker because they can’t afford to go see a doctor or can’t afford to buy the medicine they desperately need.

For them, there is no celebration. There is only pain and fear and worry and loneliness.

I can see their faces among the hundreds of precious souls your love has touched. 

I can see the weeping mother I held in my arms after she identified her daughter’s body by the hand with the fingernails she had painted that morning. 

I can hear the wailing of the rabbi who couldn’t find his son’s body, but did find curse words painted in the boy’s own blood on the wall of the cave where he was held.

I can see the little brothers, just 8 and 11, their bodies riddled with shrapnel from a terrorist bomb lying next to each other in hospital beds. 

I feel the burned skin of a young woman. I held her feet when I prayed over her because her body was almost completely burned.

I’m asking you to see their faces and their needs today and reach out to them in Christian love.

The crisis is worse than most of us even imagine. 

As you read this letter today, there are tens of thousands of elderly Jewish people — many of them precious Holocaust survivors — who are not receiving the medical care and attention they need.

It’s hard to believe in this day and age that there are people who can’t afford to pay for a visit to a doctor…or buy the medicine they need…or even find someone to help treat them at all. 

But sadly, it’s true.

Time after time over the years when I’ve taken food into their tiny apartments, precious Holocaust survivors have thanked me with tears in their eyes. 

But on most of those occasions, they have also asked if there is any way we can help them with medicine and supplements…things they need but simply can’t afford.

Israel has one of the highest poverty rates in the developed world. More than one in five Israeli people live below the poverty line, and most of them are either very young or very old. 

One of the reasons the poverty rate is so high is that more than 1.5 million Russian Jews have come home to Israel over the years in fulfillment of Bible prophecy, many of them with only a single suitcase holding everything they owned.

The national budget has been stretched to the breaking point by almost three years of war, the collapse of tourism, the continued threats that must be defended against, and the impact of the demonic BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) movement aimed at crippling Israel’s economy.

These precious people need help, and God is calling you and me to give it to them.

I’m asking you today to sound a trumpet of Christian love that will be heard across the Jewish state.

Many Jewish people think that Christians hate them. That’s what my mother thought. I was four when she told me, “Christians hate Jews. Christians kill Jews.” 

I was watching cartoons on television, and when they ended a Billy Graham special came on. She rushed into the room and turned off the TV. “Billy Graham, the Pope, and Hitler were all Christians,” she said. “Jesus is dead. Don’t dig Him up.”

Why did she think that way? Her beloved grandfather, the man for whom I was named, Rabbi Mikhail Katz-Nelson, was burned to death inside his synagogue along with 2,000 other Jews while the crowd outside celebrated and shouted “Christ killers!” 

I got to visit that site in what is now Belarus almost 15 years ago. It was a solemn moment. 

I know you share my belief that true Christians MUST love and care for God’s Chosen People, but my own family history is evidence that many who claimed to be following Jesus worked unspeakable horrors against His brothers and sisters. 

It’s no surprise that Jewish people think Christians hate them.

Today you and I have a golden opportunity to change that. Today you and I can reach out to precious elderly Holocaust survivors, young Jewish orphans, and others in distress and show them that true Christians love and care for God’s Chosen People. 

Today you and I can help meet their most urgent needs.
